Topic : Discussion with E. Lockhart!

Forum Search Tips Close

Basics

  1. Search syntax is similar to Google searches.
  2. Words shorter than 4 characters are ignored.
  3. Searches are NOT case-sensitive.
  4. Automatic 'and' queries: The search will only return pages that include all of your search terms.
  5. Only the body of the post is searched by default. Use the Advanced search to also search by subject.
  6. Word variation/stemming is currently not supported. For example, if you search for acting or acted, the search will not return results for act.

Phrase Searches

Sometimes you'll only want results that include an exact phrase. In this case, simply put quotation marks around your search terms. E.g. "cool video games"

Negative Terms

If your search term has more than one meaning (bass, for example, could refer to fishing or music) you can focus your search by putting a minus sign ("-") in front of words related to the meaning you want to avoid. For example, here's how you'd find pages about bass-heavy lakes, but not bass-heavy music: bass -music

We're very excited to have E. Lockhart here to discuss her latest release, Treasure Map of Boys with us! Ruby has quite a life while attending Tate Prep from running a bake sale to bodyguarding Noel from unwanted advances. Keeping up with all things happening around her gets quite messy. Take a peek in the book and read an excerpt from it!

We're definitely looking forward to discussing this title with E. Lockhart some more when she officially makes her visit on June 29th! Leave your greetings, questions, and comments before her special visit to our forums!

I ordered this from the Random Store; I can't wait for it to arrive.  My question for E. Lockhart is, are you planning on writing more for the Ruby series?  It's one of my favorites.

    Hi All.

I'll be here on Monday -- and "Ruby Oliver" -- heroine of The Boyfriend LIst, The Boy Book and The Treasure Map of  Boys --  will be here, too.

    Seriously.

Random House asked me if Roo could answer questions as well, so if you post a question with a heading that starts with Roo or Ruby-- then she'll reply.

A little schizophrenic for me. But fun!

    xo

E., I just wanted to thank you for writing such wonderful books! The Roo series is a lot of fun and very relateable. Disreputable was such a great book about role of girls and women in our society. However, Dramarama really spoke to me because last year, I tried out for the musical and didn't get in even though I got a part the year before. It really helped that Sadye didn't either and she wasn't perfect. She had super talented friends and had to learn how to deal. So thank you. I'm really excited for Treasure Map!!

    My questions are:

Are your characters part of the same universe like do Ruby, Frankie, and Sadye co-exist? Or could Roo read Disreputable, Dramarama, or Fly on the Wall at her library?

Do you have any upcoming books that you could give us summaries about?

Thanks again! Your books are awesome.

    -Kristin

First of all, I bought my friends the first Ruby O books this past Christmas. (We're all well past our Ruby years).

    1. How much of the excitement of Noel is his unavailability (which Ruby continually manufactures), and how much is his genuine and inherent adorableness?

    2. Also: I love how you wrap up Ruby's thoughts about Kim at the end of Book 2.  Do you think Kim was always sort of a fairweather friend, or it just emerged with interest in boys?  Why do you think Ruby didn't realize Kim's true nature sooner?

Thanks so much for your books. (I have work drama. I come home. My sweetheart reads me a chapter--or more, if I get my way. And the world is a little more manageable.)

    Hey!
I'm soo excited that you are here! I haven't currently read any of the "Ruby Oliver" books yet, my library order is still pending, however, i really loved the book "The Disreputable History of Frankie Landeau-Banks" and I wanted to ask you, what inspired you to write a story that proposes such a strong feminity?

Hi, I'm so excited (as are many other people) that you are visiting Random Buzzers. I haven't read many of your books... well, I've only read one, The Boyfriend List. I was at Borders and needed something to read, and thats what it was, I'm gonna have to say it was the frogs. It has become on of my favorite books, I think it's very easy to relate to Ruby, I mean stuff like that doesn't happen all at once like that, but everyone has had some sort of problem that Ruby goes through. Which brings me to my questions:
     1) What inspired you to write the Ruby Oliver series?
     2) Do you use any personal experiences in Ruby's life?
     3) Are any of the "boyfriends," or anyone in the book really, based on real people?

Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.

When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it's not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.

Sometimes you just have to smile, pretend everythings okay, hold back the tears and walk away.

It was nice to be alone, not to have to smile and look pleased; a relief to stare dejectedly out the window at the sheeting rain and let just a few tears escape.

    twilight-groupshot-big.jpg

I couldn't see his face, just his back as he walked away from me, leaving me in blackness. No matter how fast I ran, I couldn't catch up to him.

Today I shall be witty, charming and elegant.~~~~Or maybe I'll say "um" a lot and trip over things.

When someone says: 'It's not you, it's me,' it really is you, and if you believe otherwise, you're just in denial.

And so the lion fell in love with the lamb. What a stupid lamb. What a sick, masochistic lion.

Girls are like phones. We love to be held and talked to but if you press the wrong button... you'll be disconnected.

Ditching is healthy...until you get caught...

Jack: ... You must do me this honor, Rose. Promise me you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.
    Rose: I promise.
    Jack: Never let go.
Rose: I'll never let go. I'll never let go, Jack.

Attention is never a good thing, as any other accident-prone klutz would agree. No one wants a spotlight when they're likely to fall on their face.

*Lana Lang*--I was going to wait to talk to you in person...but I knew that if I looked into your eyes I'd never be able to say it. We thought we were meant to be together, Clark...but the truth is, we were fooling ourselves. I need you... but the world needs you more. And as long as I'm in your life, I am holding you back. Please, don't come after me. I love you, Clark. More than you will ever know.

I love your books! The Disreputable History made me want to be sneaky and brilliant. I've had a lot of sad things happening, and your books always cheer me up. Okay, question: Is real life ever as cool as it seems in books?

    Nicole:

There will be four books. The Treasure Map of Boys is #3, and the fourth is called Real Live Boyfriends. It should come out in about a year, but I don't know the exact date yet.

I can tell you, in the fourth book:

The wenchery of Cricket and Kim

    the strangeness of a  funeral

the secret crimes of gay penguins

a fraught halloween party with a sexy vampire

    and angst of many stripes.

Thanks for all your ridiculously nice compliments. (Blushing)

I wrote Ruby starting with a memory of a boyfriend list I had in high school. I was looking through a bunch of old memoribilia, and I wanted to find this list I had of all the boys I'd ever kissed -- only, it was missing.

And I thought: what if it fell into the wrong hands?

It was clearly a book idea.

I do use some personal experiences to write Roo's life but most of it is entirely made up. The high school (Tate Prep) is similar to the school from which I graduated, and small details of things people do are taken from life -- but all the major events are imaginary. I never saw a therapist as a teenager (though I have as an adult) and I never lived on a houseboat, became a famous * -- nothing like that.

The boyfriends: I am trying to get at particular FEELINGS -- so the boys are written to express emotions i experienced in high school, college, even adulthood; the characters are not based on real people, so much as the situations are based on real dynamics between people.

    Good questions!

No such thing as being past the Ruby years. I get mail from women in their twenties and older all the time.

You are very observant to notice that Ruby manufactures Noel's unavailability.  The fourth book in the series deals with that question: his unavailability takes a new shape and has to be dealt with head-on.

But Noel is indeed adorable even when available. In book three, for example, there is kissing!

As for Kim: No. I do not think she was always a fairweather friend. I think she changed, and I think Roo's flirtation with Finn eroded some of Kim's trust in Roo.

I also think Kim put a huge weight on the fantasy of the perfect boyfriend (Tommy Hazard, Jackson) and was, as many girls are, willing to risk other important things in order to realize that fantasy.

Little Blue Fish. Sorry about the sadness and glad to have cheered you up, at least a bit.

The answer: Yes and no. Real life is never as neat, rarely as witty.  I rewrite my dialog a gazillion times before it's as romantic/funny/whatever as I want it to be.

But real life goes deeper than books ever can. It surprises you more. And the story is never over in real life. You can always shift the narrative if you really want to.

Another way of thinking about it. Books are part of real life. They are a magical part.

    Kristin:

Dramarama is my most autobiographical book. I tried out for many plays and got tiny parts or no parts or parts with no lines. But in the end -- I got a novel out of it!  So you never know when really you are having an important experience.

Same universe. No!  At least, I don't think so.  Interesting to think about, though.

Upcoming books:  After The Treasure Map of Boys comes the fourth Roo book, also the last. It is tentatively titled Real Live Boyfriends and in it there is a lot of Noel, a lot of Gideon, serious parental insanity involving meatloaf, sensitive dialog with a mailbox, college applications, heartbreak and hunky shirtless wakeboarding.

Justine -- so glad you liked Frankie.

The answer is that I am a feminist. Meaning, I believe women (and anyone else disenfranchised in our society) deserve equal legal rights and equal pay for equal work.  I wanted to explore what the still- existing inequalities might mean for an ambitious girl in high school, and writing about an all boys club was a way to begin talking about that.

Also, I went to graduate school at Columbia where the "old boys" network was very much in place, and as a young woman I could really feel its power -- and its impenetrability.

I think many of my books are about girls who are deeply ambitious and encounter some kind of push-back when they try to realize their ambitions. In Fly on the Wall, Gretchen wants to draw a certain way and her teacher thinks comic book art is worthless. She also confronts the inequalities in the locker room facilities at her high school. In Dramarama, Sadye dreams of stardom -- and when she has trouble realizing her dreams, becomes confrontational with the head of her drama program about his methods.

    Thanks for the smart question.

Hallo there. I do hope you're well. I'm super psyched for Treasure Map! :D Man, you are just a wicked author.

    Here's a few questions:

What books did your teachers require you to read in high school? Did you enjoy them?

Okay, so say you've got all of these guys you've created, (Matthew Livingston, John Hutchinson, Noel DuBoise, Jackson Clarke, Theo, Titus, etc.), and you've got your high school self. Which of these guys are you most likely to make friends with or be attracted to?

Do you approve of breakfast for dinner? What about leftovers from dinner for breakfast?

Hello, E. Lockhart! It's great to have you on RandomBuzz.

I just read your latest book, The Treasure Map of Boys. I didn't read the books before it but I caught on easily. My favorite character was Finn. He was so sweet! I could just see him in my mind, a blushing little soccer player.

I wanted to ask you a question, "How did becoming a published author change your life?"

    Hey E!

I cannot wait until the Treasure Map comes out!

    1) Why did you pick Northwest USA (Seattle, right?) for your series setting?

    2) Do you develop crushes on your characters?

    3) Where did you come up with the idea of using footnotes in your books?

My name is Sandy Ing, and I am the head of the TASL (Tennessee Association of School Librarians) Promotional Committee.  Each year approximately 500 TASL members meet for enriching workshops to improve the service and atmosphere of their libraries in a yearly conference.  As with all states, Tennessee nominates outstanding books/authors for their contribution to the literary world.  For the 2010-2011 year your book, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks: a novel, has been nominated.

It is my hope that you might be willing to donate an autographed copy of this book so that it would be used as a door prize during the 2009 conference in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on September 24-26.  It is somewhat of a tradition to present autographed books to our members as prizes and I'm sure your book would be highly valued.  I have strong hopes that you will help us continue our tradition.

Please feel free to respond with any questions or comments via email.

    Sincerely,

I think it was not til' college that I really enjoyed the books my teachers assigned me. In high school I remember not even liking Pride and Prejudice (one of my favorite books of all time) and detesting Walden so much I wrote a satirical essay about it that got me in big trouble with my English teacher.

I did like Shakespeare quite a lot, especially the comedies.

In high school I  went out with one guy for most of the time -- and he was more a Jackson Clarke/Matthew Livingston guy -- though each of those characters is quite different from him and their traits are exploited and exaggerated for comic and dramatic effect.

But Fly on the Wall is my only romance. Meaning, the only book where connecting with the guy is a big part of the plot and you can really expect and desire a happy ending... so Titus is the kind of guy I'd wish for for my high school self. It's just my real high school self made a lot of the same kinds of mistakes that Roo and Frankie do.

I approve of eating what feels right to you whenever -- so long as you are treating yourself well! (ie eating reasonably healthfully, not bingeing or starving, etc.)  But I am not a huge lover of traditional breakfast foods.  I am more likely to eat leftover Thai for breakfast than to want a waffle at dinner.  How about you?
