Forum Search Tips Close

Basics

  1. Search syntax is similar to Google searches.
  2. Words shorter than 4 characters are ignored.
  3. Searches are NOT case-sensitive.
  4. Automatic 'and' queries: The search will only return pages that include all of your search terms.
  5. Only the body of the post is searched by default. Use the Advanced search to also search by subject.
  6. Word variation/stemming is currently not supported. For example, if you search for acting or acted, the search will not return results for act.

Phrase Searches

Sometimes you'll only want results that include an exact phrase. In this case, simply put quotation marks around your search terms. E.g. "cool video games"

Negative Terms

If your search term has more than one meaning (bass, for example, could refer to fishing or music) you can focus your search by putting a minus sign ("-") in front of words related to the meaning you want to avoid. For example, here's how you'd find pages about bass-heavy lakes, but not bass-heavy music: bass -music

    Dear Tammy,
First, let me say that you've been my favorite author for the longest time! Your books have really helped through some tough times and despite the fact that I'm getting out of the teen age range, I'm always going to be loyal to your writing!

Anyway, I know someone has already asked about Lord Wyldon, but you didn't answer and I'm DYING to know (wow, I sound like a total drama queen):

    1) How many children does he have (boys/girls?)? Siblings? I bet he has a totally hardcore sister that used to boss him around...
    2) Owen/Margarry: Any chance for a lady knight? Well, actually, any children at all?

    And, while I'm asking,

    3) I know that Maren/Tortall are "cut from the same cloth", but are there any distinguishing quirks that define Maren? Any little tidbits you couldn't put in the books? I'm really interested =]

    SharDovienandi, hi!

Thank you so much for your compliments.  Since books got me through my tough times, I consider being told that my books have helped someone else through their rough periods as praise of the highest order, and it means a lot to me.

despite the fact that I'm getting out of the teen age range, I'm always going to be loyal to your writing!

Thanks!  If it helps, I know a lot of people who still read teen books, including me!  With so much good, and complex, stuff out there, it doesn't carry the stigma it used to.  (And if it does with people around you, they either need to try some of what's out, or you need new people!)

    1) How many children does he have (boys/girls?)? Siblings? I bet he has a totally hardcore sister that used to boss him around...

Actually, his sister Elasabenne was the baby of the family, and her brothers doted on her.  It's amazing anyone got close enough to marry her.  She wasn't sure Lady Vivienne was good enough for her favorite brother, so they don't talk much.

As for Lady V, she gave Lord Wyldon four daughters, and Wyldon never cared that he didn't have a son.  He loves his girls:

Eiralys (oldest), Sunarine, Cathrea (a priestess of the Great Mother), and Margarry.

    2) Owen/Margarry: Any chance for a lady knight? Well, actually, any children at all?

Give them time to settle down!  They've married pretty young, and they want to have fun first!

    3) I know that Maren/Tortall are "cut from the same cloth", but are there any distinguishing quirks that define Maren? Any little tidbits you couldn't put in the books? I'm really interested

Maren tends to go for spicier foods and brighter colors in their architecture, interior design, and clothes.  The women's skirts are wider, and they wear their sleeves slit so their chemise sleeves show through.  They also cut the necklines on their overdresses lower so their chemises show more on top, and they embroider their chemises a lot more than Tortallans do.  The men have a chemise-like undershirt they like to show off.  The ladies are also experimenting with woven wire crescent-shaped headdresses into which they can put ribbons, feathers, and flowers--it holds sheer veils in place over their hair.  The men are starting to play with flat caps that they decorate with feathers and brooches.

The new fashion for ladies is making lotions and perfumes.  Certain people's products are in great demand, either because they're good or because people want to curry favor with the lady making them.  They have scent parties where they smell each other's concoctions and go looking for new scents.

Is Margarry possibly a Margery Kempe reference?

(MKempe was the first english language secular female autobiographer - she married young to a man she loved, had a bunch of kids, and then talked said husband into a chaste marriage.  Later she traveled all over the place, had a couple of businesses, talked to God and lots of smart people (and kept up with them!) and generally kicked a lot of butt.  For y'all who haven't heard of her - The Book of Margery Kempe [creative title, I know] is available for free online but it's really worth picking up a translation since the Middle English is ... creatively spelled, and can be a little hairy.)
