Topic : Names in Galla/Scanra

Forum Search Tips Close

Basics

  1. Search syntax is similar to Google searches.
  2. Words shorter than 4 characters are ignored.
  3. Searches are NOT case-sensitive.
  4. Automatic 'and' queries: The search will only return pages that include all of your search terms.
  5. Only the body of the post is searched by default. Use the Advanced search to also search by subject.
  6. Word variation/stemming is currently not supported. For example, if you search for acting or acted, the search will not return results for act.

Phrase Searches

Sometimes you'll only want results that include an exact phrase. In this case, simply put quotation marks around your search terms. E.g. "cool video games"

Negative Terms

If your search term has more than one meaning (bass, for example, could refer to fishing or music) you can focus your search by putting a minus sign ("-") in front of words related to the meaning you want to avoid. For example, here's how you'd find pages about bass-heavy lakes, but not bass-heavy music: bass -music

Wow, Tammy, this is great to talk to you...
I love all of your books, especially the Beka Cooper books.  But now's my real question

In your books, Daine and Kora and several others have names that end in sri/sra.  How do those suffixes work?

    I can't see a pattern:
    Daine Sarrasri/Weirynsra
    Sarra Beneksri
    Kora Igensra
    Inar Hadensra

When do you use 'sri' and when is 'sra' used?

    Thanks!!

    Aderyn Azula, hi!

In your books, Daine and Kora and several others have names that end in sri/sra.  How do those suffixes work?

If you have "sri" after your name, it means the only parent you're sure of is your mother--in other words, you were born out of wedlock, which some cultures consider a mark of shame (as Daine's did).  "sra" means you carry your father's name, and your father was known; he was willing to acknowledge you as his child.

In Nordic cultures suffixes like "sen" and "son" mean you're someone's son, while "datter" means you're the daughter.  I just gave it an extra twist.

... Not picking at you, Tammy, honest, but with the explanation you gave - was there a mistake re: Sarra? Shouldn't it have been 'Beneksra' if her father acknowledged her? Daine mentions a grandfather who lived with them, after all.

I'm just curious - or was there more to it than that?

yeah i was wondering that too. Sarra seems like the exception to the rule- unless Benek disowned his daughter after she became pregnant

Well, he lived with her and Daine, so I kinda doubt that. :S
