Forum Search Tips Close

Basics

  1. Search syntax is similar to Google searches.
  2. Words shorter than 4 characters are ignored.
  3. Searches are NOT case-sensitive.
  4. Automatic 'and' queries: The search will only return pages that include all of your search terms.
  5. Only the body of the post is searched by default. Use the Advanced search to also search by subject.
  6. Word variation/stemming is currently not supported. For example, if you search for acting or acted, the search will not return results for act.

Phrase Searches

Sometimes you'll only want results that include an exact phrase. In this case, simply put quotation marks around your search terms. E.g. "cool video games"

Negative Terms

If your search term has more than one meaning (bass, for example, could refer to fishing or music) you can focus your search by putting a minus sign ("-") in front of words related to the meaning you want to avoid. For example, here's how you'd find pages about bass-heavy lakes, but not bass-heavy music: bass -music

Hi Tammy. I've a few questions, and I'd like to thank you in advance for your attention (that is, if you're not too busy).

    1. If you had to write up a NPOV review on the Royal University of Tortall for prospective students, what aspects would stand out? (Yeah, I know, this question's kind of weird. :P)

    2. How does archaeology work in the Tortall universe/world and how has that impacted written history or cultural exchanges between the countries?

    3. The next question mainly revolves around Neal's family (does insanity run in his family too? ;-) ), and I have been curious about this for quite some time... How are Neal's mother, Lady Roxanne, and Glaisdan related? And how are Neal and Dom cousins? I can think of several possibilities (i.e. younger brother of Duke Baird, Dom's father, married the Masbolle heiress), but I wanted to know what was canon.

    4. Way into the future (since you seem to be swamped for the next several years), would you at all be interested in writing a book about Kally's time in Carthak? You seem to have a lot of information about what's going on in Carthak ever since Kaddar took over and since Kally became Empress, and everything you've mentioned seems pretty fascinating...

This has nothing to do with your questions, really... I just wanted to ask if you were the guy that runs and updates the "Words of Tamora Pierce" wordpress site? If you are, I bow down to you. I love having one place to go for all the Word of God information instead of searching through forums and LJ and now this place for the one specific bit of info. So, yeah... That's all.

Erm, yes, I am. But you know, just doing my part as a geeky, devoted fan. ;-) BTW, I'm glad it's proved to be useful to fellow fans. Thanks for your support. ^^ (Oh, and if there are any improvements you think should be suggested, please let me know.)

Ooh, I'm curious about #3 too. I'm guessing there's something with Neal's granfather Emry connecting him and Glaisdan, but the exact relationship would be good to know. I'm also interested about Lady Roxanne too. :D

I'm interested in Neal's siblings. I know he has a sister about Kel's age, and I seem to recall something about an older brother (or more than one) that died in the Immortals War. Do any of Neal's siblings have names? Or y'know, even knowing how many of them there are would be nice... :D

    Len, hi!

I'll do my best here, but you may have hit an area where I'm at a total loss!

    1. If you had to write up a NPOV review on the Royal University of Tortall for prospective students, what aspects would stand out?

Mage instruction features instructors who graduated with honors from the University at Carthak and the City of the Gods

Musical instruction includes lessons for traveling musicians, court musicians, noble musicians, and young ladies seeking to improve their skills.

Features schools of teaching, philosophy, geology, engineering, agriculture, music, magic, history, economics, noble arts (heraldry, swordsmanship for non-knights, calligraphy, needlework, etiquette), languages.

Grants of aid for promising students of reduced circumstances.

    2. How does archaeology work in the Tortall universe/world and how has that impacted written history or cultural exchanges between the countries?

They don't really have archaeology per se.  They have history, and traffic in ancient artifacts, and some of it gets covered in magical studies, but what we recognize as the study of archaeology is very rudimentary.  Artifacts are bought and sold, and mage-historians are paid to peg the date of the artifact for wealthy collectors.  Kingdoms like to hang onto their own artifacts, but things get taken outside borders constantly.  People are a lot more careful about poking items, though.  Given the magical component, some items pack a wallop.

    3. The next question mainly revolves around Neal's family (does insanity run in his family too? ;-) ),

    Only when he incites it!

How are Neal's mother, Lady Roxanne, and Glaisdan related?

    They're siblings.

And how are Neal and Dom cousins? I can think of several possibilities (i.e. younger brother of Duke Baird, Dom's father, married the Masbolle heiress), but I wanted to know what was canon.

Actually, it was a male Masbolle, since Dom inherited the name.  And Baird's sister.

I'll have to study on it.  At the very least, I could come up with a story sometime, don't you think?  But first the studying.  These things always work out so much better when I do that!

    Tammy

    I'm interested in Neal's siblings.

Neal's older brother, Graeme, is deceased, and his younger sister is Jessamine.  These days she is married to Balduin of Disart.

If you don't mind my asking, what is Neal's mother's name? ^.^

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! Please have some delicious Yamani rice cakes for your troubles/compensation. ;-)

you may have hit an area where I'm at a total loss!
    Really?

but what we recognize as the study of archaeology is very rudimentary.
Interesting... do you ever see it evolving into what we recognize as archaeology today in the future?

    Only when he incites it!
    :D

Actually, it was a male Masbolle, since Dom inherited the name.
Was Belden of Dunlath an exception? I assumed that was why he was called that. *is confused*

I'll have to study on it.
Nice to know that you're going to consider it. *grins happily*

Neal's older brother, Graeme, is deceased,
Who was the other older brother killed in the Immortal War?

I apologize that I have to bother you with more questions, but considering that this is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me... if you'll excuse my greediness... :P

    1. Are Kel's sisters named Demadina and Adalia (per Sheroes) or Patricia and Demadry (per pronunciation glossary)?

    2. Can you at all confirm the rumor (apparently from a book signing, I think) that we'd be seeing a young Dom (and possibly young Neal as well) in a future book?

    3. Do you plan on writing books set in other countries that we haven't really seen much of?

This is just a guess, but since there were no male Dunlath heirs (and Dunlath is in the North, it might follow those annoying "legitimate male heirs" rules like Trebond used to), and Belden was only a younger son, not likely to inherit his home fief, it was arranged when Yolane got married that Belden would take the Dunlath name and rule there once Yolane and Maura's dad died.

    Again, just a guess.

Um Len? Or Ms. Pierce? at the risk of sounding not like the obsessive in-love-with-all-works-pierce kind of person that i am, i must admit that i'm a tad confused. When did Kally (and this is the Kally in the Daine books, princess Kally yes?) get married to Kaddar? Thanks so much

I'm not Len or Tammy, but Kalasin (yes Princess Kalasin from the Daine books) married Kaddar around the time of the Trickster books, maybe a bit before. Kyprioth mentioned it in Trickster's Choice, though he didn't name Kally. He just said "[Thayet's] daughter, who's now Empress in Carthak."

    Makes sense. Thanks.

coaran explained it well. If you're looking for a precise date, the best we have is from the timeline on Tammy's website:

"prior to Feb. 462, Princess Kalasin has married Emperor Kaddar of Carthak"
