Random Hour #73: The Best Love Stories of All Time

Feb 10, 2010

Have you ever gone “weak-in-the-knees” for a book? Well, I have – especially for the classic romance stories. The great, sweeping romances that still capture everyone’s heart are my favorites. I especially love to read one of these around Valentine’s Day. Nothing puts me in the spirit quite like story of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Now that’s a literary romance that can stand the test of time!

What are some of your favorite romance books? What do you think are the best literary romances of all time?

I like Antigone by Sophecles mostly because its a tragety, even more original than R&J by Shakespeare.

I love The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Both the book and the movie version make me all weepy! Also, Janie and Teacake from Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God is an amazing (though short-lived) love. It's a beautiful story!

I would say Hamlet and Ophelia in Hamlet, but I also LOVE Romeo and Juliet

Another vote for "Pride and Prejudice".  I really dislike "Romeo and Juliet"; I read this in 7th grade and I resolved never to be like them when I was a teenager.  No teen boy was/is/ever will be worth that much angst!

My favorite romance is This Is All by Aiden Chambers. Its such a good book! It chronicles the story of a girl and how she comes to be who she is.

I am not much of a romantic story person and I am sooo not a fan of Romea and Juliet, and I do not think Hamlet and Ophelia really had anything going... I mean she kills herself because he is not paying her enough attention. My fave's have to include Pride and Prejudice ("Dearest, loveliest Elizabeth" *sigh*), Sense and Sensibility ("You must allow me to do something or I shall go mad"), and the Princess Bride ("My dear sweet Wesley. What have I done?!")! I also like the relationships in a few other works including The Fountainhead (It is a strange relationship between Howard Roark and Dominique) and The Canterbury Tales (A Knight's Tale is so heartbreaking but so perfect!!)!

The Princess Bride. It's the best love story ever. And yes, I mean the book, though the movie is good too. It's got everything you could ever want in a love story! Fencing, kissing, revenge, torture, giants, pirates, true love. And it's really a fun book too, lots of comedy in it. Come on - she gets kidnapped, and he gets killed, but it all ends up okay! (I found that phrase on a Princess Bride magnet that I have.)

Romiette and Julio by Sharon M. Draper.   Love it.  Kiss

Okay maybe very nontraditional, but I would also say the romance between Gingerbread and Shrimp in Rachel Cohn's books!

Jane Eyre. I have to pull it out every couple of years to read it again. Persuasion by Jane Austin, I love the idea of a second chance at love.

Definitely Jane Austen's Persuasion, and I love Much Ado About Nothing. Also, it's not a classic...but Nancy Werlin's Impossible is the cutest love story.

I didn't really love this book, but to me it was really good literature: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Yeah, Jane Austen mastered the art of love in her stories. Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion get another vote from me.

I agree with The Princess Bride. The movie is hilarious and amazing. I really liked Mansfield Park by Jane Austen the most because of the delicate protagonist as compared to all of Austen's stronger, more independent lead characters.
