Random Hour #11: Do You Believe in Magical Pants?

In honor of all this The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 excitement going on lately, I thought it would be fun to devote this week’s Random Hour to talking about Lena, Tibby, Bee, Carmen, and their magical Pants.

When I first read the series, I was entranced by those Pants—not only because they somehow perfectly fit four girls with entirely different body types (which I’ve always thought was pretty cool), but also because the Pants seemed to have some sort of magical effect on whoever wore them. I completely relate to this—I have a “lucky shirt” I wear whenever I feel like I could use a little extra luck. I know the idea of a shirt giving someone added luck is a little hokey, but wearing that shirt really does me feel better.

Do you have an object like this? A lucky shirt, like me? Or maybe a special headband or favorite necklace that helps give you strength? Or are you totally on the other side of the fence—do you believe that the idea of clothing or accessories having magical powers is a whole load of hogwash?

I don't think that clothing or accessories have 'magical powers'.  I do think though that you may have clothing or accessories that make you feel better when you wear them.

I believe that clothes or accessories don't actually give you magical powers... but they can make you feel like you're luckier or stronger or whatever, which will make you braver or nicer or whatever, which will make good things happen.   Right?   And hey, if it looks good, who cares if it's lucky?

By Wiesteria image Wiesteria on July 30, 2008 at 05:00:54 PM

I agree with the others. It isn't so much about your clothing giving you powers. You instill powers into them when you believe that they are good luck. The human mind is a powerful thing---positive thoughts would influence everything you do and everything you feel in such a way that you'll believe that the day was a lucky one.

Yup, these people above me spoke honestly. There is a certain clothing that makes you feel good and that feeling gives you a booth of confidence. That confidence makes you feel like you could do anything.

I don't believe that clothing can be "lucky" but I do believe that it can give you confidence which makes you believe that it is lucky. I actually have a pink necklace that I wear every Sunday morning to church. Yes, it gives me confidence, just not "luck".

All of those comments are true. I'd like to add something to that though, and that is that those Pants bring the girls together and that by itself makes you feel great, having your close friends even closer. The Pants allow them to bridge the space when they are apart. Like the others have said, they give each girl confidence and pride and give them a little boost to start the day off in a good mood. I do believe that maybe the Pants aren't "magical" in the sense of holding some sort of powers, but are magical in the sense that when worn, the Pants give each girl confidence and self worth. Inside of everyone is the person you wish and want to be, did you know that?? Well, it's true and those Pants bring out who each girl wishes she was. We all need that light sometimes to see that who we truely are is the person we have longed to be. The Pants are their light.

I have a few pieces of clothing that always make me feel good when I wear them.  It's really nice to grab those on a morning that hasn't started out very well, just to have something put a bit more bounce in my step.

By GirlwiththeBraids image GirlwiththeBraids on July 30, 2008 at 07:46:56 PM

I like the way you put that. But I agree, it gives us "a bit more bounce" in our steps.

Oh, and BookishRuth? Since you are new, I would suggest doing the activities for Likely Story in the "Participate" then "Activities" section because they end to tomorrow. Just thought I could help.

I agree with everyone in that special objects or clothes can give you confidence and make you feel empowered and I KNOW that clothes can't actually having magical powers but I also like to think that the idea of the "magical pants" is possible. That's one of the things I love about the books...you start reading knowing that the pants can't possibly be magical but you accept it because you want to believe that they are and that it's possible to find a "magical" object or peiece of clothing that can do what the pants do:)

Ahahaha, nothing is impossible. So yeah I believe in magic pants. :)

I do believe in the magical pants, but i think that they are magical because of the bond Bee, Tibby, Carmen, and Lena share. That in itself, makes the pants magical. Besides, believing in the pants make the book just so much more enjoyable. I don't have lucky clothing, but i do have lucky tokens and things that have sentimental value to me.

Yeah, I have a necklace that I wear when I feel that I need luck or strength for something in particular.  It's a kind of comfort thing.  These kinds of things only have the powers we associate with them because we associate those powers with them, if that makes any sense.  And, now that I've basically repeated what everyone else has said, I'll just say this: There's absolutely nothing wrong with associating certain powers with an article of clothing.  If it makes you feel better, then that's all that matters. Smile

I don't have any "lucky" item. I agree with those above. My only problem with "lucky" articles of clothing begins with the recipient of the luck refuses to wash said clothing... that doesn't work for me.

This reminds me of the Law of Attraction, the principal that says, in layman's terms, what you think is what you get. I have to agree with Wiesteria on this. It's all in the head.

I don't have magical lucky clothing, but I wear these rubber wristbands whenever I need a little boost. The first rubber bracelet I ever got, I earned it as a sort of prize for persistence. So, they just bring me confidence and remind me to believe in myself.

I agree with lots of what people are saying. I do beleive in "magical" pants persay. If you feel good about yourself and who you are when you are wearing something special, then it is magical.

By allire image allire on August 3, 2008 at 02:59:13 PM

I was going to say the exact same thing. =P

Yeah, I agree. If you feel lucky you're more likely to feel more confident and do more things that you wouldn't have done, if you didn't feel lucky.

By amaryllismoon image amaryllismoon on August 3, 2008 at 07:25:34 PM

I was just reading a psychology article on this earlier, actually. Not magical pants persay, but the effects and such of magical thinking. Let me explain. ... Well, let me try to explain. The idea that pants or another article of clothing or whatever can give a person luck is kind of like ritual. Let's say that I went to a baseball game, wearing a baseball cap. I hadn't actually worn the cap to the game, I had just brought it along with me. In this hypothetical situation, the team I'm rooting for is losing by a few runs and the game's almost over... bottom of the 9th, I suppose. The sun's getting into my eyes so I put my cap on so I can see the game. Bases are loaded meanwhile. Then, "magically", the baseball player at bat hits a home run, and it's a grand slam. It doesn't matter if that player happens to be the best batter on the entire team; that cap that I had put on right before the grand slam is now officially a "lucky" cap. That's just the way most minds work. Now obviously, I'll wear that cap whenever I want something to work out, and if it does, it'll just be more lucky. If not... I may assume something is "blocking" the luck. Just as anything can be lucky, anything can be unlucky as well. Like with superstition. Black cats, spilling salt, breaking a mirror, walking under a ladder... all things that people consider to be unlucky. In reality, they probably aren't. And some of the superstitions get so ridiculous nowadays... Recently, not the most ridiculous one I've heard but nonetheless, I heard that opening an umbrella indoors was bad luck. I don't know how people come to that conclusion, but somehow, it is considered bad luck. Anyways, to get back on topic, everyone believes in magic in some form or another. A lot of people, when asked if they believe in magic, will answer along the lines of, "Well, most of me doesn't believe in it, but a part of me does." So I'm not sure if I believe in magical pants or not, really. I suppose I could say I do, just because I like to believe in a little magic sometimes--it just makes life so much more fun and imaginative. It's like when you were a little kid and had an imaginary friend or something. Personally, I kept my imaginary friend for a very very long time, and now I included her as a character in one of my stories. I know she's not real of course; it's just nice to remember that time in my life when I was so open to the idea of magic and fairies and all of that. I think that's also the reason that fantasy and fiction books are so popular. Deep down inside, everyone wants to believe in magic... even if it means believing in magic pants. :)

I do believe that things like the sisterhood pants exist. I have a necklace that belonged to my 19-year-old cousin, that died of Lupis 4 years ago, and whenever I wear it, I feel more confident. It was her favorite necklace, it's a little purple butterfly, we both loved butterflies.

I don't believe that clothing and accesories have magical powers, but I do believe that cloths can make you feel good or bad about yourself because of the fit. Someting that has a significant meaning can also make you feel better when you wear it. For example, I'll normally wear necklaces that look the best with what I am wearing, but if I'm doing something special, I will alway wear my grandma's locket. My grandma passed away a couple years ago, and when I wear that locket it feels like she's still with me.
