- Random Hour #10: Best Summer Books
-
For me, the summer isn’t just about the beach, ice cream, and sunny vacations. It’s also perfect for reading those books I’ve had my eye on, but felt somewhat guilty about because it wasn’t “literary” enough. You know the ones—mostly entertainment, and not overly demanding. But honestly, I’m just not in the state of mind to read the classics right now, and I don’t think I’m alone—who wants to trudge through a 1,000+ page copy of Dickens’ David Copperfield in the middle of the summer? It’s not exactly what you’d call a “light read.”
Even though I can't help but be in a somewhat academic mood thanks to my two summer classes, I'm still trying to find some not-so-academic summer books to read. So far, I’ve reread a bunch of my old favorites (including Stargirl, Stranger With My Face, and Ella Enchanted), and it’s possible that I’m enjoying myself way too much.
What are your favorite summer books? I’d love to get some recommendations! Or are you not a big “summer book” person at all—do your tastes in books stay fairly constant throughout the year?

I recommend these light read books:
So B. It (by Sarah Weeks)
Fairest (by Gail Carson Levine) but it is not a "light read"
and also the Sharon Creech book. They are not "new" but does it matter? I mean, if you haven't read them before it isn't that much of a difference.

I just keep reading from my to read pile. But it keeps getting bigger instead of smaller
I'm never going to finish it!

I love summer, mainly because I have time to actually read. I pretty much read the same as during the school year, but I always think of Harry Potter and the Twilight series as "summer books" because the new ones end up coming out during the summer.

simplymegan-- I reread the ENTIRE Harry Potter series last summer. I spent more than a week locked in my room with my nose in those books-- so I agree, Harry Potter is definitely a summer book for me, too.

Maybe I am to much of a bookworm but I always have a pile of books that I haven't read that I have to work through. Once I get those done, their are new books that I have discovered and need to read. And then after that pile... well, it is an endless pile that does not get smaller, but seems to grow to monsterous portions.
I love rereading books. My process for rereading:
1. The first time I read every word.
2. The second time I read all the dialogue and most of the descriptions.
3. The third time, just the dialogue.
4. The fourth time, I read just my favorite parts.
5. I read the whole thing again.
Crazy bookworm quirks. (I seem to be full of them.)

je55-- I did the same exact thing last summer lol! I re-read the whole series in preparation for the 7th book. I remember I was trying to finish the 5th book before the movie came out and I was reading like 300 pages a day to get it done. Good times. haha.

Anything my friends have suggested over the year, which is mostly vampire, supernatural, sci-fi, and fantasy! I love Percy Jackson series! The best thing is that they take place in the summer, so it's really easy to get into the story!

I reread some of my summer favorites, too. I know you will love the seguel to Stargirl: Love, Stargirl. Have you read it before? It's such an amazing book to read! It's one of my favorite book. But I got some recommendations:
The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray (800+ pages)
Here's to You, Rachel Robinson by Judy Blume
Peaches by Jody Anderson
These are actually my summer favorite reads. But I'm trying to cut down on reading for a while (although I miss it already) because my eyes are nearly 700 degrees.

My book choices stay the same pretty much throughout the year... except, of course, I have more time to read in the summer.

my favorite summer reads are:
1. A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb
2. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
3. Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume
The first two are just books I like to re-read, but the last book takes place in the summer and gets me in a summery-mood

My tastes stay pretty constant throughout the year. I really enjoyed Great Expectations by Charles *ens, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, The Alchemyst and The Magician by Michael Scott, and those are just a few.

I would say I'm fairly constant throughout the year, but perhaps I might just slant to the opposite idea. Since I'm busy during the year I often tend toward what I consider lighter reads, though I don't necessarily shy away from heavier stuff. Some larger books I'll save for the summer simply because I have more time to read, and I hate trudging through some slower (but still great) books during the school year when I have less time to dedicate to reading.

During the summer, I usually find myself re-reading some of the books that I already know I love. I find myself slipping back into the abridged version of The Princess Bride; A Wrinkle in Time; The Dresden Files, things like that. I indulge my Black Stallion summer binge-those books are usually a bit smaller for me, don't take as long, but they're still quality reading that I get a kick out of. Summer is a time to try new books as well. I usually read some new books I haven't read yet during the beginning of the summer, and then I slip back into the ones I know and love. But never, never do I read serious heavy classics during the summer! I don't read darker books: Summer is a time for fun! Lighthearted is what I want during the summer.

I would really recommend books by Cecilia Ahern. She wrote P.S I Love You and I liked it so much that I read all of her books!

My book taste remains constant throughout the year. I love fantasy, especially Tamora Pierce.

Another great series for summer reading is the Witches of Eileannan series by Kate Forsyth. That is, if you enjoy fantasy books. They're a slightly more adult level, but they've still got an amazing storyline that only requires deep thought if you really want to explore them and some of the concepts presented in full. I haven't completely finished the series yet (I need to get the 6th and final book so I can read it), but I'd say it's definitely worth the reading. The series has at least a little bit of everything- action/adventure, romance, comedy, philosophy, tragedy... even a few lines of poetry where spells or song lyrics are incorporated into the story.

During the summer, i love getting to new series and books i've never got to reading. But mostly, i love rereading a bunch of my favorites. Light series books like W.I.T.C.H are entertaining and Harry Potter is always a good read. They're a great break from all the academic reading, and it's nice to have lots of time to read all you want.

Well, for me, light reading would be something >300 pages. But during the summer, I get into a "funk" where I barely read at all. When I do, it's small like Gingerbread by Rachel Cohn or The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Both are great and depict real life situations really well.
would love you all to come to www.thetwistedsisterhood.com to set up a court about teens and books. It would be awesome. Then you could all stay in contact right on the twisted site. You could also learn how to have other types of fun. We show you how to make names for yourselves in your group. I am countess gabby, becasue I am the spokes person for our group, and because I am a sales person, and because I was an angel in a play and my name was "gabby".
Come check it out, and keep on reading as it is the best hobby you could have in many different ways.

I personally love The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants series. Most people think a book about pants... is, well, stupid. Mostly, the books are just about friends & the rollercoaster they go through during their summer months in & after highschool. Each girl finds herself throughout the series, and all of them are easy to relate to, b/c they are far from perfect & everyone can see some of theirself in each one.
well ive read my share of books this summer also.
i loved reading....
Twilight Series By:Stephanie Meyer
Pretty Face By:Mary Hogan
Blue Blood Series: By Melissa De La Cruz
She's So Money By:Cherry Cheva
I Love You, You Haunt Me By: Lisa Schroeder
hey, my picks for top easy reads for the summer are...
1. the twilight series
2. reality chick
3. luxe series !!!
hah thats all i could remember now !
All of the Harry Potters are a pretty light read.
I really love the Clique series right now.
The Private Series is also really good, but it's kind of dark, so it wouldn't be too great for a summer day.

Actually, this summer I have been big on young adult, but mainly that is for a contest, which by the way I am pretty sure I am losing! Usually I am into fantasy, so I am trying to be careful because in Young Adult the characters tend to do stupid things and get themselves in trouble, which in turn makes me want to pull my hair out, and go back to fantasy! I mean how much can a girl take? right? so yeah definately trying to be careful!,

During school it's so hard to read. In order to read I have to find "special reading time", otherwise I just forget, or I don't get the chance. Usually during the summer I read books that I have wanted to read for awhile, especially books that I've found out about during school months. Books that I read during the summer include:
The Harry Potter books, The Private Novels, Sarah Dessen novels, and just books here and there. During the summer I read anything that looks interesting. I don't pay attention to author, genre or even cover art.

Most of Jerry Spinelli's books are pretty light reading unless you think about them a lot.

I read all of the time, but with college it is hard to read during the year as much as I’d like. So when summer comes around I have a huge list of books I want to read. I would recommend anything supernatural or fantasy because those are my favorite. This summer I have read tons of books, so I’m not going to list all of them. But my favorites are: The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, The Riddle – Master Trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip and The Fionauar Tapestry Trilogy by Guy Gavriel Kay. Have fun reading!!!!

I love the Maximum Ride serise. The Twilight books are awsome too.I like the Pretty Little Liars sreise to.
But I like summer for stuff other than reading.I love to camp and go to horse shows. Its harder to do shows during the spring cause of school.

You see, this is where working at a Hastings comes in handy. (Hastings is an entertainment store for smaller towns. It was music, movies, books, and games... It's a pretty cool place.) When you work at Hastings, you have an opportunity to get some free books. (There are rules around this though, you can't just pick anything... unfortunately...) Because of this, I've been able to read several book I never would have bought for myself.
They Cage the Animals at Night by Jennings Michael Burch has been my latest read. I wouldn't call it a "light" read though. It's got a pretty serious plot.
Unshapely Things by Mark Del Franco is a good fiction/mystery type book, and I would consider it a light read... though not exactly a short read. I define light read as a lighter topic/plot/theme/subject and not as a short or long book.
Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen by Garth Nix are also great reads. It's a really great series about necromancy.
The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer is also insanely amazing... So much so that I read them in one night each... I couldn't put them down no matter how much I tried.
If you like vampire books, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is a good place to start, especially if you don't like long reads. Her books usually take me about 1-2 hours to finish, but they're worth it. They may not be long, but you stay entertained. She really puts an interesting twist on the vampire myths. They're probably not like anything you've read about, but in a good way. She also has a series based on shape-shifters that I actually prefer over her vampire books.
Tamora Pierce is also a good way to go for a nice summer read. They're light, entertaining, and don't take you weeks to finish. If you're looking for something that will keep you busy for a while, she does have several series out. By the time you get through all of her series, you will have read through a few weeks. The different series, although connected, don't have to be read in order to understand the others and they don't leave you hanging. Once one quartet is over, those characters stop being the main characters and become minor characters while a new character steps up and takes their place.

My taste in books stays fairly constant through the year. If a book is a good read during the winter, it's a good read during the summer as well.
Good summer reads are usually chick lit books for me. I've just read "Queen of Babble Gets Hitched" by Meg Cabot and loved it.

For me the time of year doesn't change for me, I read the same type of things year round, just add others during the school year that I really don't want to read. But during summer I read A LOT. Last summer I reread all of the Harry Potter books, like I normally do before another one comes out, and then read the last one twice. This summer I read a bunch of Jane Austen, because I watched Becoming Jane and now I can't get enough, and I've tried to reread all of Tamora Pierce's books, it was working til I had to start my summer work for school, which is still not finished.

During the summer I actually find time to read. I think that the Uglies trilogy is a great summer series! Also the Clique series and the Twilight series. If you are looking for a book that is a stand alone novel I would say that Ever by Gail Carson Levine is the perfect one.

I love to read, throughout the school year, and especially in the summer because I actually have time to read the book, and enjoy it.
Some of my summer books are book's I've already read, but want to review,. because I liked them so much.
My summer books include: the Harry Potter series, Twilight series, any Anne McCaffrey books, whether I've read them or not, and Juliet Marillier, my favorite being Daughter of the Forest.
