    Apr 30, 2009

    judy_blume_margaret_originalHi Random Buzzers!

We are excited to share with you the first chapter from our featured author Judy Blume's book ARE YOU THERE GOD?  IT’S ME, MARGARET.

Make sure you take a few moments to read the first chapter below and then head on over to her forum and tell her what you think about the excerpt. The author is visiting our boards this week and next, so drop by and say hello or ask her a question!

ARE YOU THERE GOD?  IT’S ME, MARGARET by Judy Blume

    © All rights reserved.

Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret. We’re moving today. I’m so scared God. I’ve never lived anywhere but here. Suppose I hate my new school? Suppose everybody there hates me? Please help me God. Don’t let New Jersey be too horrible. Thank you.

We moved on the Tuesday before Labor Day. I knew what the weather was like the second I got up. I knew because I caught my mother sniffing under her arms. She always does that when it’s hot and humid, to make sure her deodorant’s working. I don’t use deodorant yet. I don’t think people start to smell bad until they're at least twelve. So I’ve still got a few months to go.

I was really surprised when I came home from camp and found out our New York apartment had been rented to another family and that we owned a house in Farbrook, New Jersey. First of all I never even heard of Farbrook. And second of all, I’m not usually left out of important family decisions.

But when I groaned, “Why New Jersey?” I was told, “Long Island is too social-Westchester is too expensive-and Connecticut is too inconvenient.”

So Farbrook, New Jersey it was, where my father could commute to his job in Manhattan, where I could go to public school, and where my mother could have all the grass, trees and flowers she ever wanted. Except I never knew she wanted that stuff in the first place.

The new house is on Morningbird Lane. It isn’t bad. It’s part brick, part wood. Also, there is a very nice brass knocker. Every house on our new street looks a lot the same. They are all seven years old. So are the trees.

I think we left the city because of my grandmother, Sylvia Simon. I can’t figure out any other reason for the move. Especially since my mother says Grandma is too much of an influence on me. It’s no big secret in our family that Grandma sends me to summer camp in New Hampshire. And that she enjoys paying my private school tuition (which she won’t be able to do any more because now I’ll be going to public school). She even knits me sweaters that have labels sewed inside saying MADE EXPRESSLY FOR YOU?BY GRANDMA.

And she doesn’t do all that because we’re poor. I know for a fact that we’re not. I mean, we aren’t rich but we certainly have enough. Especially since I’m an only child. That cuts way down on food and clothes. I know this family that has seven kids and every time they go to the shoe store it costs a bundle. My mother and father didn’t plan for me to be an only child, but that’s the way it worked out, which is fine with me because this way I don’t have anybody around to fight.

Anyhow, I figure this house-in-New-Jersey business is my parents? way of getting me away from Grandma. She doesn’t have a car, she hates buses and she thinks all trains are dirty. So unless Grandma plans to walk, which is unlikely, I won’t be seeing much of her. Now some kids might think, who cares about seeing a grandmother? But Sylvia Simon is a lot of fun, considering her age, which I happen to know is sixty. The only problem is she’s always asking me if I have boyfriends and if they’re Jewish. Now that is ridiculous because number one I don’t have boyfriends. And number two what would I care if they’re Jewish or not?

  • Random Hour #34: Judy Blume Classics

    Apr 29, 2009

I am so excited about our featured author visit with Judy Blume! Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Then Again Maybe I Won't, are among my all time favorite novels and no matter how much time passes I find myself rereading them and still being able to relate to the characters and Judy's exceptional writing.

First crushes, school dances, entering a new school, and so much more, her stories cover the trials and tribulations that we all face through our teenage years. Judy seems to write what we all are secretly thinking but don't have the guts to say out loud, and she manages to do it in a funny, approachable way.

How about you? What's your favorite Judy Blume book?

  • Exciting News: Best-Selling Author Judy Blume Visits Random Buzzers This Monday!

    Apr 24, 2009

Judy BlumeWe are so excited to announce that author Judy Blume, who has written a collection of classics that include Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Then Again, Maybe I Won’t to Just as Long as We’re Together and Here’s to You Rachel Robinson. Check out the new covers for these titles and many more at your local bookstore later this month!

Judy Blume continues to write new books. Her fourth book in the Pain & the Great Ones series, Friend or Fiend? is about to be published. Although this new series is for middle graders, it’s great to know that Judy is still part of every child’s life – both old and new!

Judy will be visiting Random Buzzers from 4/27 to 5/8. Be sure to stop by to say hi, ask questions, and share your thoughts on writing with her this month!

Get a head start! Post your question to her now by visiting THIS thread.

Also – make sure you take time to vote for your favorite Judy Blume classic in this poll. We will choose the 2 titles that receive the highest number of votes and do a giveaway!

This is a special message to you as she makes her way here today:

    Hi, Random Buzzers!

Thanks for asking me to join you!

I’m about to start writing a new book (this reminds me of my mother who always said, “I’m about to start a new diet,” except I mean it—really!) but first I’m doing research—and enjoying every minute. Unlike writing, which can be pure torture for me (the first draft, anyway), reading newspapers from the winter of ’51–’52 is exciting. In addition to the major news story (the center of the novel), I’m finding out what was playing at the movies, what music teenagers were listening to, and what they wore. I remember a lot of this firsthand because I was in eighth grade at the time and I have a really good memory for my past. (Just don’t ask where I put the keys or where I parked the car—two things I’ve never been able to remember.)

I’m excited, too, by the new cover art for my YA novels—from Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret and Then Again, Maybe I Won’t to Just as Long as We’re Together and Here’s to You, Rachel Robinson. (The list also includes Deenie, Tiger Eyes, and Forever.) It’s like seeing your kids dressed up for the holidays. I’m not always crazy about the cover art on my books, but this time I think it’s just right.

The fourth book in the Pain & the Great One series, Friend or Fiend?, is about to be published. I’ve been asking first graders if they know what a fiend is and most of them don’t. I tell them they will after they read the first story in this book. If you babysit or know any kids in kindergarten to third grade, maybe you can read one of these books to them. They have cool illustrations by James Stevenson. I’ve always loved his style. He’s laugh-out-loud funny.

I’m in Key West now, where I ride my bike for transportation and tap dance for fun. You can catch up on everything else at JudyBlume.com. I have a blog on my Website and I try (not always successfully) to put up a new post every two weeks. In the meantime, I look forward to chatting with you on Random Buzzers.

    xx Judy

  • Happy Earth Day To All The Bookworms!

    Apr 22, 2009

As some of you may already know, it's Earth Day and we here at Random Buzzers wanted to wish you a happy one!

There have already been some really good buzz about how you can recycle unwanted books that are accumulating on bookshelves and beyond so we thought we'd give you some more bookworm friendly advice for Earth Day!

    • Donate Unwanted Books - all readers could use a little more shelf space. If you are going to be re-organizing your shelves to make more room for upcoming books, don't throw the old ones away - donate them! Take them to a local used bookstore or look for great programs within your town libraries that would be more than happy to take them in!
    • Green Clean Shelves - if you are going to be clearing out those shelves and giving them a good dusting, make sure to use natural, environment friendly products to clean such as white distilled vinegar.
    • Read by Natural Lighting - we could all save a little energy. Make sure to catch some reading time by the window with natural lighting or sit by a lamp powered by an energy saving light bulb.
    • Recycled Bookmarks - get your arts and crafts on and pick up scraps of paper, magazines, postcards, flyers, etc. and spruce them up with ribbons, beads, and/or just collage bits and pieces together to make a unique hand-made bookmark. Every reader could use an extra bookmark or two!

Do you have any other ideas you'd like to pass along to fellow readers? Let us know how you are celebrating Earth Day 2009!

  • Random Hour #33: Quotes

    Apr 22, 2009

"Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

I have always loved quotes.  Quotes can be inspiring, meaningful, uplifting, and sometimes, they can help us express our emotions when we can’t seem to find the words ourselves.

I have gathered quite a collection over the years and my quote book is truly one of my most treasured possessions. Reading through the words of wisdom from great poets, songwriters, authors, and philosophers is both thought provoking and motivating. I also find that my quote book is a great resource to have on hand when writing papers, graduation speeches, scrap booking, and just writing letters to friends.

I have so many favorite quotes it would be hard to pick just one! What about you? Do you have any favorite quotes?

  • Random Hour #32: Role Models

    Apr 15, 2009

In the novel Nobody’s Prize by Esther Friesner, we are introduced to a young heroine called Helen of Sparta. Although blessed with enormous beauty, Helen sets out to prove there is so much more to her than just her looks. Helen can kick butt and isn’t shy with standing up for what she believes in. It’s refreshing to know that there are role models like Helen that young girls can aspire to.

How about you? Do you have a role model? Who are they and what qualities do you look for in a role model?

  • Join Our Very Special First Dual Author Appearance Starting Tomorrow!

    Apr 13, 2009

Nobody's PrizeGreat news! On April 14, Random Buzzers will have two guest authors visiting and chatting with all of you on the forums! We’re extremely excited to have our first dual-author visit with Esther Friesner, author of Nobody’s Prize and Tamora Pierce, bestselling author of several fantasy books. Tammy will be promoting Bloodhound - her second book in the Beka Cooper Trilogy. Join us this week as they come on board to chat with you!

Read a special note from Esther Friesner below and visit her special thread HERE:

    ---

    Hi!

I’m so pleased to have been invited to participate on Random Buzzers to talk about Nobody’s Prize. I enjoyed writing it, as well as Nobody’s Princess, because I’ve been fascinated by Helen of Troy for a long time.
Both books take place on the corner of Myth and History, one of the most fabulous neighborhoods I know. I’ve always loved reading myths, legends, and lore—not just Greek and Roman, but Norse, Egyptian, Hawai’ian, you name it! And history? It’s so much more than a list of dates and famous names; it’s real people facing real problems. Sometimes they find a way to soar, and sometimes they fall flat on their faces. I read it all avidly and take notes because—surprise!—history does repeat itself. I’d rather learn from the how-to-soar cheat-sheet because my face can’t take the alternative.
The trouble is, history is just one subject in a packed school day, so you don’t get to really enjoy it. You miss out on the life, the conflict, the romance, the drama, and sometimes the just-plain-juicy gossip behind it all; in other words, the real story.
Every day there are new archaeological finds to move things like the Trojan War, the Amazons, maybe even Helen herself, out of the realm of myth and into a place in history. And where did the people who made these discoveries get the idea to look for answers in the first place? By asking questions.
I love questions. Come by and ask me some: Questions about myth, history, writing Helen’s story, or just about writing. Ask away.
    I’m looking forward to it.

    Esther M. Friesner

BloodhoundTammy has also left a special note for you. After you've read her greeting to you, please head on over to her very own thread HERE and leave any questions and/or comments that you'd love for her to check out and answer!

    ---

    Greetings, RandomBuzzers!

I’m Tamora Pierce—Tammy—here to hang out for the next two weeks, give or take. And have I got a book for you!

It’s called Bloodhound, and it’s the second book in a fantasy trilogy about Rebakah Cooper, a young Provost’s Guard, or cop. Actually, they’re called Dogs in Beka’s day, and in the first book, Terrier, about her time as a trainee with the two toughest Dogs in the capital’s worst slums, she has already earned one respectful nickname: Terrier. It’s because people discovered that when she had her teeth in a crime, or a criminal, she did not let go.

In Bloodhound, Beka and her fellow Dogs are on the trail of counterfeiters. Already their fake coins have weakened the city’s economy to the point that the Provost’s Guard had to put down a bread riot. Someone is making perfect copies of the realm’s most common silver coin, but who? Beka and her partner, Clara Goodwin, are sent to the city of Port Caynn to check out a lead on gambling. They’re undercover, their true reason for being in Port Caynn unknown to anyone but Beka’s friend, Sergeant Nestor, and the Deputy Provost of Port Caynn. But they aren’t exactly alone. They travel with Slapper, a mad pigeon who carries the ghosts of the restless dead who speak to Beka and Achoo, a scent hound that Beka is just learning to handle.

Together Beka and Goodwin (and the pigeon and the hound) will have to deal with gamblers, lovers, an insane queen of Port Caynn’s outlaws, crooked Dogs, and a rising tide of false coin that could bring the kingdom to collapse. Even with Goodwin to advise her, Beka is in way over her head—and the tide is coming in!

I’m excited to be here in this time, right before I go off on book tour. I always enjoy hanging out and answering questions—about my books, about writing, about anything you like! So feel free to ask whatever’s on your mind, and I’ll try to answer without making another book out of it. (I’m not promising, mind. There’s a reason I’m a novelist instead of a picture-book writer!)

    See you on the 14th!

    Tammy (Tamora) Pierce

  • The One Good Thing In Our Lives

    Apr 10, 2009

Everyone has their times of being down and under but there will always be that one thing in your life that you can always turn to. Whether it’s a tangible object that can soothe you like a favorite book or album or something more along the lines of spirituality and looking beyond to find comfort, everyone has something profoundly good in their lives. It’s what keeps us going and striving for more.

Sometimes I let the cynic in me take over when I am down and under but then I realize that I’m just having a selfish reaction. I know that when times are tough, they can always get tougher. A tangible object I can literally always turn to is my bookshelf. It’s loaded with not only wonderful books but movies, music, and pictures filled with people whom I love and care about.

What is one thing in your life that is really good and wonderful that can help you get through those rough times?

Share a good story with us and you could be one of five lucky winners for a mystery ARC! Check back to this post to see if you make it to the winners list.

    Happy Friday and good luck!

My one good thing is my small collection of music CDs. If I'm down, I can always pop in a Jack Johnson or Corinne Bailey Rae CD and my mood instantly brightens. These artists have such wonderful voices and fun beats, as well as great lyrics, that I can't help but get up and move around. I start singing along and I'm smiling. Between the beachy vibes and the beautiful voices, I'm instantly happy.

One of my best friends in the whole world is my cat. I've had her since I was seven and we just seem to get each other now. I can tell when she just wants to nap or if she's feeling like chasing some yarn. If I've had a really bad day, she curls up on my pillow and lets me cry into her fur. She doesn't care that it gets all matted, she just purrs and nuzzles my face.

One thing that always cheers me up, no matter how down I'm feeling, is a good game of Scrabble with my friends or my family. Growing up, Scrabble games were a huge family event, and a competitive one, and now I count myself as lucky to have found a group of friends who are just as dedicated to the competitive art of word games. Nothing cheers me up like cleaning up at the Scrabble board.

OHVAGUEONE Drawing. When I moved in 7th grade, I was so depressed at leaving my friends that all I did was draw in my new school. Drawing was what I did with my friends all the time before I moved. It was fun, we were good at it (or so we thought) and it was something we had in common. We were a tightly knit group, and I, being very shy, had trouble adjusting to my new life. Drawing helped me ease in and cope. Now, a few years later, my new friends always remember me back then as the shy, quiet girl who drew all the time. It's nothing more than a hobby, but it's important to me.

shadowflight13 I am thankful for my gift of writing and for this site. I don't know what I would do without that way to express myself or these amazing people to help me!
