  • Random Hour #28 - What If?

    Feb 25, 2009

In our lives we are faced with constant choices. Some of them are simple like what to eat for dinner and what movie to watch, while others, like whom we will marry and where we will go to college are more complex and actually shape the way our lives will turn out. When I was younger I used to love to read Choose Your Own Adventure Books. They allowed you to choose one way and then go back and see how things would have turned out if you chose a different path. If only we could do that in life.

Do you ever stop and ask yourself what if? What if something in your past had been different, would you still be where you are today? What if I chose to go left when I should have chosen right? Would my entire life’s path be irreversibly changed?  What if I never meet my soul mate? What if there is no such thing...? Asking yourself what if can be a scary thing because it causes  you to question the status quo and challenge your truths, essentially, causing you to think of the way things could or would be, rather than just accepting things as they are.
Inspired by Carrie Ryan’s The Forest of Hands & Teeth many of you came up with your own what ifs

    What if…
“everything were in black and white?” - ambear

“our lives are really just a page in someone else's story?” - zacx10

“tomorrow was too late?” – pupgirl

Complete all 3 Forest of Hands & Teeth activities for a chance to win a signed copy of the book!

Here is her special letter to you:

    ---
    Hey Random Buzzers!

I’m so thrilled to be here to chat with y’all – thanks so much for inviting me!  I’m especially excited that y’all have had a chance to preview and read my debut, THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH.  I can’t wait to hear what you think and to answer any questions about the book, me, writing or anything else that comes up!

The idea for THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH originated when I asked “what if?”  Somehow, even though I’ve hated horror movies since the Poltergeist incident of 1983 (in which my babysitter turned out all the lights and made me watch the movie even though I was only five), my then boyfriend (now fiancé) convinced me to go see the remake of Dawn of the Dead with him.  As we walked out of the theater (after 2 hours of me clutching his arm in terror) I couldn’t stop wondering how I would survive such an apocalypse.  I couldn’t stop wondering “what if?”

Since then I’ve become fascinated with how people survive catastrophic or apocalyptic events.  I haven’t been able to move into an apartment or a house without wondering, “What if the Return happened, would I be able to survive here?” (And the answer is no, not in my current house!)  Or, what if we forgot history?  What if we didn’t know the ocean existed?  What if everything we’d been taught turned out to be wrong?

Of course, I also like to ponder other questions like, what if I won the lottery, what if brownies were actually better for you than spinach and what if sleep burned more calories than jogging?

Here’s to always wondering “what if?” and to an exciting two weeks chatting!

    Cheers!
    Carrie Ryan
