Hey Random Buzzers!
I’m so thrilled to be here to chat with y’all – thanks so much for inviting me! I’m especially excited that y’all have had a chance to preview and read my debut, THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH. I can’t wait to hear what you think and to answer any questions about the book, me, writing or anything else that comes up!
The idea for THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH originated when I asked “what if?” Somehow, even though I’ve hated horror movies since the Poltergeist incident of 1983 (in which my babysitter turned out all the lights and made me watch the movie even though I was only five), my then boyfriend (now fiancé) convinced me to go see the remake of Dawn of the Dead with him. As we walked out of the theater (after 2 hours of me clutching his arm in terror) I couldn’t stop wondering how I would survive such an apocalypse. I couldn’t stop wondering “what if?”
Since then I’ve become fascinated with how people survive catastrophic or apocalyptic events. I haven’t been able to move into an apartment or a house without wondering, “What if the Return happened, would I be able to survive here?” (And the answer is no, not in my current house!) Or, what if we forgot history? What if we didn’t know the ocean existed? What if everything we’d been taught turned out to be wrong?
Of course, I also like to ponder other questions like, what if I won the lottery, what if brownies were actually better for you than spinach and what if sleep burned more calories than jogging?
Here’s to always wondering “what if?” and to an exciting two weeks chatting!
Cheers!
Carrie Ryan
