  • Random Hour #21: Giving Thanks

    Nov 26, 2008

I once saw an Oprah episode with a woman who made a list of what she was thankful for every single night before bed.  She claimed that performing this simple act each night had enriched her life and made her a much happier person.  While I have to admit I was a bit intrigued by this and could totally see how focusing on the blessings rather than the negatives could have a positive effect on one’s life, I was by no means planning to commit to this time consuming process.  Here this woman was going on and on about how this caused her to lead a more stress free life and I couldn’t help but feel that having to write down what I was thankful for every single night would just be another item on my ever-growing to-do list and make me, well.. Stressed.
Let’s face it, sometimes we can get so caught up with our everyday busy schedules that we tend forgot to take the time to stop and smell the roses.  So while I don’t necessarily feel the need to do this every single night, I do feel it important to do once in a while and this is why Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  I see absolutely nothing wrong with a day designated each year where you don’t have to work or go to school; you can eat as much as you want without feeling bad about it, and most importantly you are encouraged to focus on the many blessings in your life and why you are thankful for them.

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

  • Random Hour #20: Genres

    Nov 19, 2008

Yesterday, my friend Jessica told me about a new book she had just finished reading that she absolutely loved.  The title escapes my mind at the moment, but when I asked her if I would like it, she said “I don’t really think it’s your type of book”.  I was a little taken aback by this comment and responded with “What is my type of book?” I suddenly realized the shocking fact that I don’t know the answer to this question!

I immediately started mentally tracing back through my entire history of reading, starting with my first favorite books (Are You My Mother and The Berenstein Bear Series), and all the way up until the present.  I tried to find a consistent pattern in my reading habits; a genre that I seemed to repeatedly enjoy, but as hard as I tried to find one, there was no apparent pattern.  Sure I had gone through phases; there was the time right after I read The Other Boleyn Girl when I became obsessed with period pieces, and then there was the time when I swore of chick lit novels for fear that I wasn’t reading anything of substance and became determined to read only non-fiction books that had some education value. I guess you could say that none of these “phases” lasted for very long.

After agonizing over this question over and over in my head and trying to come up with an answer I finally came to a realization. I don’t like any one type of genre in particular. When it comes to books, I don’t have a type.  And that’s just fine.

What type of books do you like? Do you have a particular genre that you like, don’t like?

  • Random Hour #19: Music

    Nov 12, 2008

Lately I can’t help but notice that each time I turn the radio on almost every song is about heartbreak. Dannity Kane’s Single “Damaged” has remained at the top of the charts since the beginning of summer and Taylor Swift just revealed that the  song "Forever and Always” on her new album “Fearless” was inspired by her breakup with Joe Jonas.

I have always felt that listening to music can be great therapy when going through a bad time, and apparently I’m not the only one. There are those songs that can help lift your spirits and motivate you to move on, and then there are the ones you listen to when you just want to cry your eyes out. Not only can listening to music be helpful in these situations, but some people find that writing music is therapeutic as well.

Many great artists and writers have revealed that going through hardships inspires more creativity than when things are going well. I have always found writing to be the best way for me to express my feelings but writing music has just never been my thing. So while I so wish I was one of those people who was able to channel all of my feelings into a beautiful piece of music and then proceed to strum away on my guitar while belting out the lyrics from my newest tune, unfortunately I am not.

Do you tend to listen to music to help you through rough times? Do any of you write your own music?

Please share I would love to hear!

  • Random Hour #18: Defining Moments

    Nov 5, 2008

Last night something monumental happened in our country. The United States of America was built on the foundation that you can achieve whatever you want in life no matter where you come from or what color your skin is, and last night Americans reminded themselves and the world that these ideals have never been more true.  It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican or a Democrat, if you wanted John McCain to win, or you believed in Barack Obama, last night we were all the same; we were all Americans.

As I watched the future 44th President of the United States of America step onto the stage last night in front of a crowd of over 100,000 at Chicago’s Grant Park to accept the position of US President Elect, I couldn’t help but feel like I was witnessing history in the making.  It started me thinking about “Defining Moments”. Our lives are not defined by a series of everyday mundane happenings, but rather, by those moments that are so pivotal that they transform our present, and change our future. While some Defining Moments, such as graduating from school, or the moment you met your best friend, will shape your personal history, others, such as the one last night, affect us all.

While our parents’ generation remember where they were when JFK was shot, or when the first American took the first steps on the moon, our generation will remember where we were when the first African American was announced the next American President.

I would love to hear what you buzzers have to say about this “Defining Moment” in America’s history or any other defining moment in your life!  How do you feel about being a part of this new chapter in America’s History and what will you remember about it? What have been the Defining Moments in your own personal history?

NOTE: This blog post is intended to have you tell us what you think about different definining moments in the world and in your own lives. We are not endorsing any particular candidate or political affiliation, we just want to hear the moments in your life that you think have defined who you are. We encourage all of you to share your defining moments.
